TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, managed care pharmacists, pharmacy directors, medical directors, quality directors, policy executives, and other key managed care administrators.

STATEMENT OF NEED
Although commonly considered a disorder of childhood, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects individuals of all ages. Undiagnosed and untreated, ADHD can have significant lifelong morbidity with a negative impact on academic achievement, social behaviors, and vocational success. Early recognition and proper assessment of ADHD can enhance educational, economic, and psychosocial patient outcomes. Treatments for patients with ADHD include medication and behavioral approaches, both of which can be costly. Processes that identify at-risk patients, confirm the diagnosis, and employ evidence-based treatment algorithms can be effective strategies to improve outcomes and effectively manage costs associated with ADHD. Additionally, collaboration between multiple caregivers including primary care physicians, mental health specialists, family members, and teachers can increase the likelihood of treatment success as indicated by reduced disability, lowered utilization of health care services, increased productivity, lowered risk of medication diversion, and overall lowered costs.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this continuing education activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify ADHD as a treatable neurobiological disease within a broad patient population in managed care
  • Indicate how managed care can facilitate the clinician's ability to provide appropriate therapy to patients
  • Describe management techniques and tools to improve clinical and economic outcomes as well as the HEDIS measure for the treatment of ADHD
