Shrinking Health Care Disparities in Women:
The Depression Dilemma Case Studies

Release Date: November 12, 2007
Expiration Date: November 11, 2008

Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians who are interested in shrinking the health care disparities in women.

Statement of Need
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 19 million American adults suffer from depressive disorders. Interestingly, women are disproportionately affected by depression, experiencing it roughly twice the rate of men. This ratio exists regardless of racial and ethnic background and economic status. Despite this prevalence, however, nearly two-thirds do not get the help they need.

Learning Objectives
By participating in this activity, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the symptoms of a woman with depression and develop an appropriate treatment plan while considering unique gender barriers and issues.
  • Assess patient treatment through cases on depression.
  • Integrate best practices into your work environment to ultimately improve patient health and productivity outcomes.
